Here are some of the biggest and most spectacular gaming competitions to attend in 2018.
Evolution Championship Series (EVO)
The world’s biggest fighting game tournament is a brilliant display of skill and fun. Evolution Championship Series hosted some of the most epic battles ever fought. Its attractive open format means that veterans may be paired with unknown players in a competition full of surprises.
EVO 2018 will take place in Las Vegas from 3-5 August. Titles to be played this year include Street Fighter V, Tekken 7, Guilty Gear, Injustice 2, Super Smash Bros Melee, Super Smash Bros for Wii, Dragonball Z Fighter and BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle. Visitors can look forward to lots of free play and a chance to meet some of their favourite pro players.
League of Legends World Championships
The tremendously successful League of Legends World Championships is one of the world’s biggest video gaming competitions. Last year, 24 teams fought for the World Champions title. The prize pool was $1 million, and audience reached more than 60 million people.
The next meeting of the League of Legends top players will be in October 2018. Currently, South Korea’s SK Telecom T1 holds the record with three wins, but who knows what can happen next?
The International (Dota 2)
The biggest Dota 2 Championship is also the tournament with the largest prize pool in eSports ever. Last year, 18 teams of 90 players competed for a portion of the prize pool of $24,687,919. The winners, Team Liquid, won $10,862,683. Second place (Newbee) won $3,950,067 and third place (LGD.Forever Young) won $2,592,231.00. To qualify for this year’s International, players must win Qualifying Points competing in 11 Majors and 16 Minors around the globe, with the most recent ones taking place in Poland, Romania, Indonesia and Sweden.
Blizzard Entertainment’s annual event is a gaming convention, a video game tournament and a rock concert – all in one. It takes place every year in Anaheim California and it is an event meant for the fans of World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Overwatch, Diablo, Starcraft, and Heroes. Dates for this year are still to be announced.
DreamHack is a Swedish gaming convention hosting various events during the year all over the world. The next event is scheduled for April in Marseille. Sixteen of the world’s best CS: GO teams will fight for the title and $250,000 in prize money live in Le Dôme de Marseille.
